Many practitioners refer to procedures involving the injection of Botulinum Toxin as ‘Anti-Wrinkle Injections’.

Botulinum Toxin is injected using a fine needle, into the target muscle to temporarily block the nerve signal resulting in weakening of the muscle action. This can result in the improvement in the appearance of lines of facial expression. These injections can be safely and effectively administered to the full forehead, frown lines and around the eyes to achieve a more youthful appearance.

Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to treat the lower face including intra-orally or excessive gingival display (gummy smile), lower face (jawline) and vertical platysma bands of the neck. It is also effectively used to manage hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) in areas such as the underarms, hands and feet.

There are other areas that are less commonly treated with botulinum toxin including the chewing muscles responsible for muscular temporomandibular mandibular joint disorder (TMJD) and bruxism. Botulinum toxin injections have therefore become an attractive choice as an adjuvant therapy in patients with muscular TMJD who do not achieve a complete response with conservative measures and pain management.
